US Navy Destroyers in Cork

1917 - 1919

From their arrival at Queenstown,on the 4th of May 1917. The US Destroyer Force was sent into action in the War Zone. Their duties were initially patrolling and sub hunting, but the advent of the convoy system meant a far better utilisation of these craft.

Other duties included secondment to the US Battleship Group in Castletownbere, hunter-killer patrols in the Irish Sea, and scouting for arms landings for Irish Republicans . Tempestuous seas, and grey skies conspired to frustrate navigation, but great seamanship meant that convoys were escorted to the deep Atlantic, and incoming ones were successfully met.

This chronology is drawn mainly from Admiralty documents and is a work in progress. As Primary documents are used, there may be some errors in dates and vessel names. This account does give some idea of the harshness of destroyer duty, with false alarms, collisions, and the ever present U-boats.
