Whiddy Island USNAS
Station.
There are still some remains
to be seen on Whiddy Island, of the World War One United States
Naval Air Service Station. They are located on the eastern side of the island
and can only be reached by walking northwards along the shore
from the ferry pier.
This peaceful island is well
worth a day-trip, with three 19th Century gun batteries with
accomodation blocks visible on the north, south and centre of
the island. There is an hourly ferry during the summer season
which only takes 10 minutes from Bantry. The pub at the pier-head
in Whiddy also serves food. |

The remains of the main
slipway along which the Curtiss 'Large America' Flying boats would
be launched. |

There are large amounts
of concrete apron underfoot - partially hidden by vegitation. |

Concrete footing of one
of the large radio masts |

The only building remaining
on site - local tradition has it being an ammunition bunker. A
contemporary photo however shows that there was a large water
tank on top of it. The structure may just be a pump house. |
 |
Whimsical ornamental fountain
on site, made of concrete, with patterns of quartz pressed in
at intervals. This is known locally as the'cup and saucer' |
